I don't want my son to become a gaming freak at his tender age, and so to pry him away from the computer, I asked him if we could do the planting ourselves - both of us, in real life, sans the zombies. Surprise, surprise! He agreed! And so earlier today, we spent a good three hours arranging tomato seedlings in a huge plant box. (Yay, three hours away from the computer, haha!)

- Wear old, comfortable clothes. You know how messy things could get, and we don't want to soil the 'good clothes'.
- Allow the kids to do things by themselves. Give them a small area to work on, sort of a space for them to call their own.
- When watering the plants, let them use a water gun. This makes the activity more fun for the kids. Plus it's too risky to let them use a hose or a watering can. There's a great possibility that the kids could drown the poor plants, haha.
- Remember to keep the gardening tools (hoes, shears, and the like) in a safe place. Waterloo tool boxes are a good place to store these tools once you're done gardening.

At least, you were able to use his love for plants vs zombies to actually do an actual planting which is educational for your kids part.

ReplyDeleteMy 4 yo likes plants too esp. flowering plants! She would get a packet of flower seeds in the grocery and bring it to me saying, "Ma, can we plant this at home pls!" But we don't have enough space so hopefully sa Turkey nalang where we have a big lot to plant flowers. Or maybe in my province in my grandpa's land.

Oh how cute! My mom loves planting too so sometimes I bond with her thru that :)
ReplyDeleteWell done, mommy! :) I used to love to plant with my girls when they were small. Sunflowers were a favourite, because they grow so quickly.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! My son brought home a little plant from school and keeps bugging me to plant it outside - but I have to tell him we have to wait for the snow to melt!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely keep gardening tools safely away from kids -- and their play shovels too! My daughter unplanted a bunch of seedlings a few years ago. She decided she wanted them by her swing. Sadly, they didn't make the move. :(
ReplyDeleteomg so cool! hope i can gardening too! but no space in a condo to do so. though we have plenty of space back in our farm in aust. haha truly good for a mother daughter or son activity. My daughter and I go for a swim atleast 2 hours each day for extra exersice for me too!

ReplyDeleteLOVE this idea! As mom to a former avid gamer, I completely resonate with the challenge of coming up with a plan that works to pull the kiddos away from the computer. I'm going to be starting our planting this coming weekend - WITH my 'gamer' son. Woohoo!
